Chamber vs external vacuum sealer: which one for your product

Wet product, liquids, throughput and bag compatibility — the decision that prevents the most expensive mistake in vacuum packing.

The decision that prevents the most expensive mistake

External suction machines draw air through an embossed bag while the bag sits outside the machine. Chamber machines put the whole product inside a sealed chamber and pull a full vacuum around it. The difference decides whether your product can be packed at all.

Choose a chamber machine when…

  • Your product is wet, liquid, or has any free moisture — external units pull liquid into the pump.
  • You pack irregular shapes that need full evacuation.
  • You need throughput — chamber machines cycle automatically.
  • You need repeatable vacuum level for shelf life or compliance.

Choose an external suction machine when…

  • Your product is dry and flat — hardware, textiles, dry goods.
  • You pack large or long items that cannot fit in a chamber.
  • Your volume is low and the lower machine cost matters more than cycle time.
  • Chamber size would be impractical for the item's dimensions.

The bag question comes first

External suction requires an embossed or channeled bag — the air travels along the texture. Chamber machines use smooth bags, which are cheaper and available in more formats. If your packaging choice is fixed by a customer or a regulation, it may already have decided the machine.

Throughput maths

Chamber machines have a cycle time per batch — draw vacuum, seal, release, reload. External machines seal continuously. For high pack counts per minute on a dry product, external wins on speed; for wet product at any volume, the chamber wins because the alternative does not work.

What to confirm before you buy

  • Product type, moisture content and whether it is hot when packed
  • Bag material, thickness and format
  • Chamber dimensions needed for your largest item
  • Target packs per minute
  • Site voltage and whether the machine needs compressed air

The honest answer

Most buyers who ask this question are packing a food or liquid product, and the answer is almost always the chamber machine. But the choice still has to come from your product and your bag — not from the machine's price.
