How long does a forklift battery last?

The answer

There is no single lifespan figure, because it depends on duty cycle, depth of discharge, charging behaviour and ambient temperature. The same battery can last very differently across two sites. Instead of a year figure, ask each route for the stated cycle life and warranty terms in writing, and compare those.

In more detail

Anyone quoting a battery lifespan in years is either describing their own ideal conditions or guessing. The variables that dominate are not on the battery label.

Depth of discharge matters most: a pack regularly run to a low state of charge ages faster than one kept in a narrower band. Charging behaviour follows — opportunity charging is gentler than deep cycling, and charging a hot pack is harder on it than charging a cool one. Ambient temperature compounds both, because a cold store reduces usable capacity and can stress the charging routine.

That is why the useful comparison is not "how many years" but "what are the stated terms". Ask each route for the cycle life it specifies, the capacity at your working temperature, and the warranty terms in writing. Those are checkable. A verbal lifespan estimate is not.

Confirm before acting

Confirm before acting

  • Stated cycle life per route, in writing
  • Battery capacity at your actual working temperature
  • Warranty terms and what they cover
  • Whether the charger is matched to the battery
  • Cell and BMS maker, where lithium is specified
