Forklifts & material handlingWhat maintenance does an electric forklift need?
An electric forklift needs mast and chain inspection, hydraulic checks, brake and tyre wear checks, and battery-specific care. With lead-acid that includes water topping-up and terminal cleaning; with lithium, the battery itself is largely maintenance-free. The wear items that actually stop a machine should be identified at quotation stage.
In more detail
The maintenance question matters less for what it costs than for what stops the machine. Most unplanned downtime comes from a small set of wear items rather than from the drive system.
On an electric counterbalance truck the recurring items are mast chains and rollers, hydraulic hoses and seals, brake components, tyres, and the battery. With lead-acid, add water topping-up and terminal care to the routine, plus ventilation management in the charging area. With lithium, the battery itself needs little attention, but the charger and the state-of-charge routine still have to be understood by whoever runs the truck.
The practical step is to get the wear-parts list at quotation stage, not after delivery. A parts list and an exploded diagram tell you whether a part is standard or proprietary, and whether it can be sourced locally. Ordering a first set of the fast-moving items with the machine avoids waiting on an international parcel for a consumable.
